Liquor Shops In Delhi Hike Prices Up To 70%

NEW DELHI| On Monday Delhi Government imposes a 70 percent hike in the price of liquor from Tuesday. Delhi government name it as a “special corona fee” on alcohol.

In the late hours on Monday, Arvind Kejriwal came up with the notification stating, “70 percent of the maximum retail price on all categories of liquor sold through retail licensees”.

Central government’s call for the nationwide lockdown from March 23, After more than 40 days liquor shops were open in lockdown 3.0. But the norms of social distancing went for a toss and overcrowding were seeing outside many of the 150-odd outlets. To hold the crowd back police have to impose mild lathi-charge and shops were forcibly shut.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned that violations may lead to complete sealing of area. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also said Delhi, a ‘Red Zone’, may have rushed into opening liquor shops.

The spokesperson said the government amended the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, for special fees.

Delhi earns around Rs 500 crore per month from the sale of liquor.
