MLAs Skip Suvendu Adhikari’s Meeting Amid Reverse Migration Concerns

With 24 of the BJP’s 74 MLAs giving a miss to the meeting, speculation started about further reverse migration to Mamata’s TMC.

As a section of its MLAs stayed away from Suvendu Adhikari’s meeting with the Governor on Monday, the BJP’s efforts to counter reports of the “reverse migration” of its leaders to Mamata Banerjee’s party in Bengal failed. Leader of opposition in Bengal assembly- Suvendu Adhikari- met Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Monday evening with a delegation of party MLAs.

The meeting was organised to inform the governor of “several inappropriate incidents happening in Bengal and discuss other important matters”.

However, with 24 of the BJP’s 74 MLAs giving a miss to the meeting, speculation started about further reverse migration to Mamata’s TMC. This development also proved that not all MLAs were ready to accept Mr Adhikari’s leadership.

Sources have said several MLAs are upset and some are indeed in touch with the Trinamool, hoping to return following the footsteps of Mukul Roy.

On Monday, Suvendu Adhikari threatened to approach the Speaker of the House seeking application of the anti-defection law against MLA Mukul Roy if he does not resign in a day. Mukul Roy has switched to Mamata’s TMC with his son.

Mr Adhikari, without naming Roy, said: “An MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar has changed party, and we hope he will resign from the membership of the assembly. If he does not resign by tomorrow, we will write to the Speaker on Wednesday seeking application of the anti-defection law.”

Adhikari said BJP national general secretary Bhupender Yadav and Union Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad are “looking into the matter” and legal steps will be taken after seeking their opinion.

“The BJP legislature party has decided to take recourse to the law if the matter is not settled,” the legislator told reporters.”
