More Recoveries Than Fresh Cases, How Coronavirus Curve Is Flattening In Kerala

The number of coronavirus cases in Kerala is 376, including 3 deaths; 2 new cases have been reported and no deaths have been reported for over a week.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is on its way to becoming the first state in the nation to flatten the COVID-19 curve. If this is validated by April 18, then it can be concluded that Kerala will also be the first state to be free of the highly infectious COVID-19 which can be confirmed after about 28 days of no new cases.

There is a total of 376 cases of coronavirus in the coastal state, including 3 fatalities. On the weekend, the third patient who died was from Puducherry. No new fatality has been recorded from Kerala in the past week. Only 2 new cases were reported on Sunday, while 36 patients recovered.

The state also has a high number of recoveries, 179, second only to the worst-hit state of Maharashtra with over 2,000 cases.

In January, coronavirus was first reported in the state.

In March, the state was on the top of the states’ list of highest cases. The state of Kerala, a week ago, had reported 357 coronavirus cases, the number of deaths remaining the same.

A majority of the cases in the state are people who returned from abroad – which is around 232.

“COVID-19 curve of Kerala has started to flatten. The active cases for the last one week have declined. The recovered cases (green curve) will cross the yellow curve soon,” tweeted Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac.

The CEO of plan panel Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant, is among those who have praised the Left-ruled state for its efficient COVID-19 response.

The approach by the state was effective because it was ā€œboth strict and humane,ā€ said Shahid Jameel, a virologist and infectious-disease expert.

Other states too are sure to follow the suit of Kerala but it may take more time considering that clusters are still developing in many states where it is sure to reach stage 3 or community spreading.
