National Register of Citizens: 40 lakh left out from the final draft list in Assam

Guwahati | 40 lakh people are declared homeless in Assam after the State NRC coordinator released the updated draft list of Indian citizens released today.

In order to count the illegal migration into Assam from neighboring Bangladesh, the government released an updated The National Register of Citizens or NRC for the first time since 1951. While addressing the press, the state NRC coordinator said, 2,89,83,677 people found eligible to be included in the National Register of Citizens. Officials asserted that this is only a draft, and no one would be deported and punished based on it.

“Every person whose name was in the first draft but is missing from final draft will be given an individual letter to file claim for her/his non-inclusion during claims and objections,” said the Registrar general. Home Joint secretary in-charge for North East Satyendra Garg further stated that based on this draft there is no question of any reference to Foreigners Tribunal or any person being taken to the detention centre.

Responding to the draft Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said,”Even someone whose name is not in the final list can approach the foreigners tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone, hence there is no need for anyone to panic.”

He further added that Some people are unnecessarily trying to create an atmosphere of fear. This is a completely impartial report. No misinformation should be spread. This is a draft and not the final list.

Meanwhile, TMC MP Sougata Roy has given an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha over the NCR list draft. Assam Congress chief while speaking to media said,”40 lakh names ineligible is a very high figure and very surprising. There are lot of irregularities in the report. We will raise this issue with the Govt and in the Parliament. Political motive of BJP is also behind this.”

Around 3.29 crore people who had applied for their names to be included in the list, Claims and objections from those left out of the citizens’ list will be taken up from August 30. Around 1.9 crore were cleared in the first draft released on December 30.
