Nirav Modi refuses to surrender, cites threat to life

In a mail written to ED, Nirav Modi said that he fears for his life and there might be a danger to his life if he returns.

 

New Delhi| The absconding diamond trader Nirav Modi has refused to return to India. Modi who escaped the country after duping crores of Punjab National Bank has written to the Enforcement Directorate and said that he cannot return the country. The ED is currently investigating the case. In a mail written to ED, he said that he fears for his life and there might be a danger to his life if he returns.

Referring to his effigy being burnt by people during Holi, he said there is anger against him among people and thus he fears for his life. He also said that he and his family have received threats from his employees to other agencies. In such circumstances, he finds it unsafe to surrender before the authorities and return to India.

Along with Nirav Modi, his uncle Mehul Chowksi too is accused of defaulting on the bank loans. ED filed charge sheets against Mehul Choksi on May 24 and May 26. A non-bailable warrant has also been issued against both. Interpol has also issued a Red Corner Notice against both the accused.

According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), so far in the PNB scam case, property worth Rs 4,800 crore has been seized in India and abroad. In addition to the Rs 13,500-crore PNB scam, many officials of the bank have also been named as accused.
