“It is not a factory producing Bills”: Anand Sharma objects to extension of sitting

Congress leader Anand Sharma said that “It cannot be a daily thing”. He also slammed the government saying that the Rajya Sabha is not a factory producing bills.

 

New Delhi| Rajya Sabha today witnessed a ruckus after the parliamentary Affairs minister proposed the extension of sitting. The opposition MPs created an uproar in the upper house as V Muraleedharan proposed that the Rajya Sabha should sit beyond the scheduled time today.

Objecting to the proposal, Congress leader Anand Sharma said that “It cannot be a daily thing”. He also slammed the government saying that the Rajya Sabha is not a factory producing bills. “Every day, it cannot be a punishment to the House,” the Congress leader said. Anand Sharma also stated that the laws affect the people and have to be carefully looked into. He added, “The house is not a factory producing bills and legislature must be respected.”

The uproar began when the Minister suggested that the house should sit beyond 6 PM until the disposal of the bill. The Rajya Sabha was discussing the Motor Vehicles (Amendment), Bill. After Sharma’s comment, several opposition members from Samajwadi Party, CPI, Trinamool Congress asserted that they are supporting the government on the Bill. However, they said that the pending discussion could be done tomorrow along with the minister’s reply.

Responding to MPs, Muraleedharan said, “This bill is pending from a long time and as legislators, we are sitting here to solve the problems of society.” He added that passing a bill is not a sin.

Meanwhile, leader of the house Thawarchand Gehlot tried to pacify the situation. He said that the bill is important and needs to be passed today. He also offered to withdraw the names of BJP members from the list of speakers for the discussion.
