P Chidambaram Welcomes Govt Decision To Start Passenger Trains

Resuming road, rail & air services for passengers & goods is the only way to restart economic & commercial activity, Chidambaram said.

New Delhi| On Monday, former Union finance minister P Chidambaram welcomed Central government’s move to restart some interstate passenger trains from May 12 amid the national lockdown due to the pandemic.

“The same modest opening should be started with road transport and air transport,” Chidambaram said in a tweet.

Chidambaram said that resuming road, rail & air services for passengers & goods is the only way to restart economic & commercial activity in the country.

“We welcome the decision of the government to cautiously start operations of interstate passenger trains,” senior Congress leader’s tweet read.

On Sunday, the Centre announced that 15 interstate passenger trains will start operations from May 12 after the services were suspended in March due to the enforcement of the national coronavirus lockdown.

The total cases in India surged to 67,152 including over 20,000 cured/discharged or migrated and 2,206 deaths amid lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In the past 24 hours, 97 casualties were recorded. A staggering 4,213 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours, highest so far.

Currently, there are 44,029 active COVID-19 patients in the country
