Petrol, Diesel Prices Skyrocket, Congress Launches Protest Across The Country

Congress party has also launched a digital campaign called “Speak Up Against Fuel Hike” to corner the government.

 

New Delhi| The rising fuel prices continue to burn a hole in common man’s pockets. Continuing the recent trend on Monday, petrol became costlier by 5 paise and diesel by 13 paise. With this, the diesel rate in Delhi reached a new level of Rs 80.53 per litre. Diesel probably for the first time in decades has become costlier than petrol in Delhi. Diesel rates have increased 22 times since June 7. During this period, diesel has become expensive by Rs 11.14.

Oil companies started raising rates from 7 June. Since then, petrol rates are increasing every 21 days. During this time petrol has become expensive by Rs 9.17.

Fuel Prices: 2014 and Now

The Central Government imposes Central Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel and the State Governments levy Value Added Tax. In April 2014, when crude oil was around $ 105 per barrel, diesel prices in Delhi were at around Rs 55 per litre. The base price, fare and dealer commission was 45.5 rupees. On top of this, the government used to charge Rs 10 as tax. That is, the government used to charge 18% of the money you paid for a litre of diesel.

Currently, crude oil is at $ 40 a barrel. As per the June 16 price breakup, diesel was priced at Rs 75.19 in Delhi. The base price, fare and dealer commission was 25.76 rupees. Above this, the government is collecting Rs 50 as tax. That is, the government is charging 66% of the money you are paying for a litre of diesel.

Congress Protest Against Fuel Price Hike

Congress has opened a front against the government after the increase in the rate of petrol and diesel amidst Coronavirus lockdown. Congress party and its leaders are staging demonstrations across the country today. It has also launched a digital campaign called “Speak Up Against Fuel Hike” to corner the government.

Several Congress leaders have set out on Cycles, Bullock cart etc to protest the rising fuel prices. Meanwhile, Delhi police arrested some Congress workers protesting at petrol pumps against the fuel price hike.
