Relief to customers: Bank employees Union postpone strike

Four unions of Bank employees had demanded the implementation of the 11th pay agreement, along with opposition to the merger of the banks in the strike.

 

Mumbai| Bank trade unions have postponed the proposed strike on 26th and 27th September. Bank unions had announced to go on strike in protest against the merger of 10 banks.

The strike was postponed after a meeting between Union Leaders and Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar. Bank unions say that the government has taken their demands seriously and has assured to consider that.

Four unions of bank officers announced a two-day strike from 26 September. This included All India Bank Officers Confederation, All India Bank Officers Associations, Indian National Bank Officers Congress and National Organization Bank Officers. The unions had demanded the implementation of the 11th pay agreement, along with opposition to the merger of the banks in the strike.

Last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the merger of banks. He said that 4 banks will be merged to merge 10 public sector banks. Different trade unions in the banking sector are opposing this decision of the government. Unions say that with the loss of thousands of jobs, non-performing assets (NPA) will also increase.
