Sameer Wankhede’s father files a defamation suit against Nawab Malik

Mumbai: A defamation suit has been filed against Maharashtra Cabinet minister Nawab Malik by Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NBC) zonal director Sameer Wankhede’s father Dhyandev Kachruji Wankhede.

Wankhede’s lawyer, Arshad Shaikh, said Malik has been calling the Wankhede family “fraud and questioning their religious beliefs, saying they are not Hindus”. He added that Malik was calling everybody (in the Wankhede family) a fraud. Literally, on a daily basis,” and destroying the practice of his daughter Yasmin, who is a criminal lawyer and does not appear in narcotics cases.

The suit says that Malik has done “irreparable loss, damage, harm, prejudice to the name, character, reputation and societal image of plaintiff and his family members”.

Dhyandev wants a permanent injunction restraining Malik, his party members and all others acting under or on his instructions from publishing, writing or speaking in the media about him and his family members.

Dhyandev has also prayed that the high court should declare that Malik’s “remarks, insinuations and/or imputation, whether in writing or oral, stated by him” in press releases or interviews or social media, including but not limited to his Twitter account and his family members, be “tortious and defamatory in nature”.

Dhyandev has sought Rs 1.25 crore compensation from Malik for carrying on this tirade against the Wankhede family. Wankhede has moved court during vacation and the suit will be heard on Monday.

In spite of filing the suit, Malik will be addressing a media gathering on Sunday morning.

Although this is not the first defamatory suit that has been filed against Malik, earlier BJP leader Mohitt Kamboj has also filed a 100 crore defamation suit against Malik in Bombay high court.

Malik, however, said he will not be bothered by these suits and will continue to speak against what he calls “injustice” by NCB officer Wankhede.
