SC Expresses Displeasure Over Central Vista Project, But Allows Ground-Breaking Ceremony

Supreme Court said that no construction or demolition work or felling of trees shall take place at the Central Vista project site.

The Supreme Court on Monday, just days ahead of the foundation-laying ceremony of the new Parliament building, expressed its displeasure with the manner in which the Central government is proceeding with construction work under the Central Vista project.

The Apex court, hearing a bunch of petitions, said that no construction or demolition work or felling of trees shall take place at the Central Vista project site. Such direction would remain valid till it decides on the pleas which have opposed the Central Vista project, the top court added.

The court, however, refused to stay the foundation-laying of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 10, i.e. Thursday. Though, the order came after the Centre assured the court that it will not go ahead with construction or demolition work for the Central Vista project till apex court’s decision on the matter.

The Centre can proceed with requisite paperwork and proposed ground-breaking ceremony for the Central Vista project, the SC said.

Anguished by centre’s haste in going ahead with the project, the SC had granted just 5-minute time to the Centre to apprise it of the government’s view on the construction of the Central Vista project.

M Modi is scheduled to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Parliament building later this week, under the Central Vista redevelopment project. The new construction is planned to be ready by 2022 at an estimated construction cost of Rs 971 crore.

The new building will be earthquake resistant and as many as 1,224 MPs can sit together for joint sessions, as per Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Mr Birla also informed that once the new Parliament building is ready, the present building will be conserved as an archaeological asset of the country.
