Chandigarh : Punjab government on Wednesday, formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the murder of Lakhbir Singh at Singhu Border.
The SIT will be headed by Additional Director General of Police (Bureau of Investigation) Varinder Kumar and comprising of two other members, Ferozepur Range Deputy Inspector General Inderbir Singh and Tarn Taran SSP Harvinder Singh Virk, has been constituted following a complaint made by Lakhbirâs sister, Raj Kaur.
As per the order by Punjab officiating Director General of Police Iqbal Preet Singh, Sahota Kaur, a resident of Cheema Kalan has purported that her brother Lakhbir Singh was enticed by some unknown persons and taken to Singhu, where he was murdered.
The decision to form SIT was taken after a meeting between Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Chhani and his Deputy, Sukhjinder Randhawa. Earlier in the day, Randhawa had tweeted indicating a likely probe, âThe beating of a laborer from Tarn Taran seems to be a conspiracy to discredit the struggle of the peasants. I promise that the government will go to the bottom of this matter and identify and expose the conspirators.â
The order also noted that SIT was being constituted âfor a thorough and expeditious enquiry into the matterâ.
A purported photograph of a Nihang sect head, Baba Aman Singh, with Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar triggered a controversy on Tuesday, with the Sikh religious leader alleging that the Centre offered money to the Nihangs to leave the farmersâ protest site at Singhu.
A member of Aman Singhâs sect is the prime accused in the Singhu lynching. After the incident, Aman Singh had justified the killing in his remarks in videos that went viral.
The photograph â which includes former Punjab Police officer Gurmeet Singh Pinky, who was dismissed from service and convicted in a murder case, and BJP leader Harwinder Garewal â is believed to be from a meeting about two months back.
On Wednesday, in another video, Lakhbir â before his hand was chopped off â is purportedly heard saying that Rs 30,000 was promised to be given to him as he also mentions a phone number of another person.
