Supreme Court asks details on pending cases against lawmakers

New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked all the state chief secretaries including Registrars General (RGs) of the high courts to provide details on the criminal cases pending against the members of parliament and members of legislative assemblies.

The Court further asked the state government whether the cases against the lawmakers have been transferred to the special courts after the Apex court December 2017 order. Responding to the petition, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Navin Sinha and Justice KM Joseph asked whether special courts set-up in after the top courts were functional.

The bench further asked that is there a need to set up additional special courts against lawmakers facing criminal charges as there is a large number of pending cases. The Court’s response has come after it found unsatisfactory information in the affidavit filed by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on September 11.

In a filed affidavit the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated that out of the total 1,233 criminal cases were transferred to the special courts only 136 have been disposed off while remaining 1,097 were pending.
