Supreme Court Gives 15 Days To Send Migrants Home, Asks States To Provide Jobs

During the hearing, the Centre told the court that till June 3, 4200 labourers special trains were run to take the migrant labourers home.

 

New Delhi| The Supreme Court on Friday heard the case of migrant labourers. The court told the central and state governments that we want to give you 15 days time so that you can take all the migrant labourers trapped in the country to their homes. The court asked the states to make necessary arrangements for the workers who are coming back. The apex court will issue orders on 9 June on migrant labourers.

During the hearing, the Centre told the court that till June 3, 4200 labourers special trains were run to take the migrant labourers home. About one crore people have been transported to their original place of residence. At the same time, the court has asked the Center to file a reply in a week regarding the highest limit of fees for treatment of corona in private hospitals. The court said this during the hearing of a petition.

What did states tell the court on migrant labourers?

On behalf of Uttar Pradesh Senior Advocate P. Narasimha said – There is no rent being charged from the labourers in the state. 1664 labourers special trains have been arranged to bring these migrant labourers to the state and 21.69 lakh people have been brought back so far. Buses have travelled more than 10,000 times from Delhi and 5.50 lakh migrant labourers have been brought back from there.

On behalf of Bihar, senior advocate Ranjit Kumar said – 28 lakh people have returned to Bihar. The Bihar government is taking all necessary steps to provide employment to all these people.

On behalf of Delhi, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain said – 2 lakh workers are still in Delhi. These people do not want to go back. Less than 10 thousand workers have expressed their desire to go to their original place of residence.

For the charitable private hospitals that have been given land to build hospitals at nominal prices, the Supreme Court asked them whether you can provide treatment to Corona patients for free. The court asked the hospitals to report whether schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Yojana could be implemented during treatment.

During this, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said on behalf of the Center said that those who cannot afford the treatment, they are being covered under this scheme. “We have taken steps. The Center has also taken corrective steps to distribute food. We are doing what is possible with us,” Mehta said.

In the last hearing, the court gave 4 interim orders

1. During the hearing of the case on May 28, the Supreme Court said that no fare should be taken from migrant labourers travelling by train and bus. State and Union Territory Governments should bear this expenditure.
2. State governments should provide food and water at the stations and the railways should make this arrangement for labourers within trains. Food and water should also be given to them on buses.
3. State governments should provide food for the trapped labourers across the country who are waiting for buses and trains to go to their homes. Where will the workers get food and where will the registration be. Its information should be disseminated.
4. The state government should look into the process of registration of migrant labourers and also ensure that they get a train or bus as soon as possible to travel home. All information related to this matter should be given to the people.
