Trouble for Modi? Tamil Nadu government files contempt case against Union government

The Tamil Nadu government has taken this step after it had come under fire for its failure to secure the Cauvery Management Board for the farmers.

In a big blow to the Union Government, Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK government filed a case of contempt against it due to the inaction of the government in Cauvery issue. The government led by AIADMK’s Palaniswamy on Saturday filed a case against the Water Resources Secretary UP Singh and Union Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha under contempt of court. The Supreme Court of India had earlier last month asked the government to set up a Cauvery Management Board to ensure the decided amount of water share to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. However, the deadline for this expired on Thursday.

The Cauvery issue had been at the centre of Tamil Nadu politics for many years now. Even during the Budget session, AIADMK MPs protested outside the parliament demanding the government to look into the matter. In its petition to the Supreme Court, the Tamil Nadu government sought to initiate contempt proceeding against the union government for “willful disobedience” of the Supreme Court order.

The government also requested the apex court to direct the Union Government to implement the judgement dated 16.02.2018. The Tamil Nadu government has taken this step after it had come under fire for its failure to secure the Cauvery Management Board for the farmers.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretaries of the Cauvery Basin states have caught in confusion over interpretation of the Supreme Court judgement. Union Water Resources secretary UP Singh said that the tribunal has recommended a board. “The SC doesn’t use the word Cauvery Management Board. It says the scheme,” said Singh.

Reportedly, Singh also suggested alternative models based on Bhakra-Beas Management Board and Narmada Control Authority During the meeting.
