UP: In A First, Dalit Groom Set To Ride A Horse On His Wedding; Local Police Provide Protection

This comes after he sought police protection ahead of his wedding, alleging that local upper-caste strongmen have threatened him against riding a horse during the ceremony.

A 22-year-old Dalit man from UP’s Madhoganj village in Mahoba district is set to ride a horse for his wedding on June 18, marking a first.

This comes after he sought police protection ahead of his wedding, alleging that local upper-caste strongmen have threatened him against riding a horse during the ceremony.

Speaking to The Wire, the man says that upper caste members of his village have threatened to kill him after they got to know about his plan of riding a horse. That is when he decided to write to the police, requesting security, which was granted immediately. He could not have been happier.

Alakhram, the groom-to-be, said “For the last several years, marriages in our village have been taking place according to old traditions. I want to ride a horse for my marriage procession but some people, from other communities, are threatening to kill me,”

After inquiry among locals on Thursday, police have concluded that he faces no objection from society but is keeping a close watch on the matter.

“We could not find a single person in the village who has any issue with the groom, Alakhram, riding a horse. However, we are keeping a close watch on the matter,” said Prabhakar Upadhyay, sub-inspector at Madhoganj Police Station, according to ANI UP.

As per usual traditions in rural North India, Dalit grooms go to the bride’s house or a marriage hall on foot, as they are not ‘allowed to ride horses by the local upper-caste members.

Meanwhile, a two-person UP Congress team was sent by Priyanka Gandhi who talked to the groom and his family, assuring support.

According to AmarUjala Alakhram expressed happiness over the team’s visit to the village and handing over an invitation letter to the Congress team by writing an invitation letter in the name of Priyanka Gandhi, requesting that her to attend the wedding.
