#Watch: Major security lapse at Mumbai airport; Man jumps off the wall to “see plane”

Mumbai| A major security lapse occurred at the Mumbai Airport when a man reached the runway and stood in front of a plane ready to take-off. A video of the incident has been widely shared on social media.

SpiceJet’s SG634 aircraft was ready to fly to Bangalore. Around 1.30 pm, a 26-year-old resident of Sion crossed the no-entry zone by Jumping off a wall on the south side of Runway-27. However, the police said that the person tried to cross the fence / wall of the airport and was immediately caught by the CISF.

A senior DGCA official said, “When the pilots of the SpiceJet aircraft saw the person coming towards their aircraft standing on runway number 27, they immediately shut down the engine of the aircraft, showing a presence of mind to avoid any accident.”

Another police officer said the person had all “documents” to show “mentally unwell”. Another police officer said, “No action has been taken against him. Members of his family are coming to take him home.” “The person seems mentally weak,” said a DGCA official. He said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) would investigate the matter further. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has also ordered an inquiry.
