WATCH: Waterlogged Mumbai Struggles, Landslide Near Kandivali Hits Southward Traffic

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in Mumbai today. The BMC has asked all non-essential government offices and private offices to be closed.

 

Mumbai| Mumbai and surrounding areas have been receiving heavy rains since late Monday night. This has disrupted life since Tuesday morning. The low-lying areas of the city are flooded and knee length Waterlogging has been reported in some areas. As it is a working day, the office goers are facing constant problems. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in Mumbai today. The BMC has asked all non-essential government offices and private offices to be closed. It has also asked the commercial establishments except those of essential services to be closed.

The Meteorological Department has warned of high tide in the Arabian sea at 12.45 pm. During the high tide, waves can rise up to 5 meters high in the sea. People have been asked to be vigilant and stay away from the sea shore. If it rains in the city during this time, the situation can become severe.

The trains on Harbour line have been suspended due to waterlogging on rail tracks. Western line has also stopped operation whereas Central line has cancelled trains on Kurla to CSMT station route. As per reports, 8 BEST bus routes have also been diverted.

A landslide was reported early morning at Western Express Highway near Kandivali’s Samata Nagar. This has severely affected the South Mumbai-bound vehicular movement. Vehicles moving towards South Mumbai lined up as the landslide blocked the roads. Reportedly the traffic has now been diverted to Ghodbunder road.

Waterlogging in following areas of Mumbai

Hindmata, Dadar, TT Kings Circle, Sion, Chembur, Andheri, Santacruz and other low-lying areas have been flooded in Mumbai. Road traffic is also getting severely affected. The Andheri subway ahas been closed. About 220 mm of rain was recorded in Colaba observatory while in suburban Santacruz, 254 mm of rain was recorded.

Apart from Mumbai, a red alert has also been issued for Thane, Pune, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra. Here too, there may be heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
