The Yogi Adityanath-led UP government has renamed the Mughal Museum in Agra to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum. CM Yogi Adityanath, in a review meeting on Monday with Agra’s officials, approved renaming of the museum.

According to reports, Yogi Adityanath asked the officials during review meeting: “How can Mughals be our heroes?”

In 2016, the construction of the museum had began near the iconic Taj Mahal and was scheduled to be completed by 2017. However, the construction work is still underway. Non-availability of funds led to delay in construction apart from the deferred establishment of the state electricity department’s storeroom on part of the 5.9-acre land allocated for the museum, reports suggested.

Located a little over a kilometre from the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal, the 17th Century monument built by Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum is being built by renowned firm David Chipperfield Architects along with Noida-based Studio Archohm.
