Menstrual Hygiene

Green Pencil Foundation Organised a survey Cum Campaign On Menstrual Hygiene For teenage girls in Seth Parsram Parumal New Era High School & Junior College

On 4th February the Drive was Conducted by the Green Pencil Foundation City Head Rakshita Manglani. We started a Survey yesterday from Hyderabad and today it will be in Mumbai and it will end on 28th February on Menstrual Hygiene Day. Considering February as a Menstrual Month, we people are conducting a survey in 11+ cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Mysore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Aligarh, Chennai, Mohali, and Bangalore to present the ground reality about the Periods of Poverty and Taboos.

The survey was conducted by the green pencil foundation’s volunteers to know the root-level challenges that teenage girls are facing in their menstrual hygiene management. In a survey around 100 girls participated from 6th to 8th standard. During the survey, Green Pencil Foundation learned out of every 100 how many are hesitant to share about the periods with their male family members. In the survey, we are also able to find out whether out of each 100 teenage girls in Mumbai are properly aware of the periods during their first period or not. We are developing in technology and are one of the growing nations. This is a topic of attention for our society that considers periods as taboo and is not a better deal with the women’s section. It’s a question for us as well where on one side we are talking about women’s empowerment and other side girls in our society don’t have the right to speak openly about their periods. During a survey out of each 100 girls, 35 are not able to talk with male family members of their own family. During survey responses out of 100 girls16 consider periods are not good for their health. Thus this is the biggest question for us, that being a society that we are teaching them, we have to give them the right to talk about periods openly in the classroom, with family and friends. We have to consider it in the syllabus after 5th standard onwards so that teenage girls should be aware before their first periods.

During the survey, Sandy Khanda, who is the Founder & Campaign manager of Green Pencil Foundation said we are targeting to organize & expand this campaign in all government schools & slum areas In Thane, Dharavi, and Ulahasnagar to know the root level challenges and we will educate the teenage girls about Menstrual Hygiene Management in these areas.

Sandy Khanda, also stated that this is the biggest campaign run by the foundation in many Indian states & cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Rakshita Mangalni who is the mayor of Green Pencil Foundation, Mumbai added a point that the Government needs to add a Menstrual Hygiene Management syllabus & should mandate to educate about Menstrual Hygiene Management for all girls above the age of 9 years. So that they can easily cope with the periods and manage themselves in a better way. During the campaign, We also explained how to deal with the cramps during the Menstruation Cycle. It was a wonderful response from all participants & volunteers last time as well in Thane. The survey cum awareness will be conducted on the 4th of February. Through this survey cum campaign Green Pencil Foundation wants everyone to be part of this change because change always begins with us. It’s our responsibility to talk with our mothers, sisters, and friends openly about their periods.
