2 Men Found Dead While Transporting Cattle, Family Alleges Mob Lynching

Two men transporting cattle were found dead after being allegedly chased by unidentified people in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district early Friday, according to the police. The men were discovered lying on rocks below a bridge, but one victim’s family claimed they had been lynched.

A third person with them, Saddam Qureshi, 23, was injured and hospitalized. The deceased are Guddu Khan, 35, and Chand Miya Khan, 23. Qureshi and Chand, who are cousins, are from Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, while Guddu is from Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh.

Police in Arang, where the incident occurred, said they will record Qureshi’s statement to understand what happened. He is currently in critical condition.

Kirtan Rathore, Additional Superintendent of Police, Raipur district said “We received information that they were being chased by some people and then found lying below the Mahanadi bridge. Our team rushed to the spot. One of them had died, and two were taken to a hospital in Mahasamund, where another died. The third is in serious condition at a hospital in Raipur city.”

He added, “A vehicle with cattle was found on the bridge. We are waiting for the post-mortem reports of the two men. We are checking CCTV footage along the route. So far, we have no evidence to confirm it’s a case of mob lynching. Efforts are being made to identify those who chased the trio.”

A cousin of Qureshi and Chand Miya Khan told The Indian Express that the two men called home several times between 2 am and 4 am on Friday while they were reportedly being attacked.

During one of these calls, which lasted for 47 minutes, the cousin claimed Qureshi could be heard screaming for help and pleading not to be assaulted.

“We could also hear some men asking him, ‘kahan se laaye ho…chodenge nahi [where did you bring it from…we will not spare you],'” said the cousin.

He also claimed that during one of the calls, Chand Miya Khan informed the family that they were being assaulted after their vehicle was stopped.

“Then someone snatched his phone,” said the cousin. “We didn’t call the police at that time because we didn’t think it would escalate to this extent.”

He mentioned that the family continued trying to reach Chand Miya Khan, but he did not answer. “Finally, around 5 am, a police officer answered and informed us that he was dead.”

The cousin stated that the family was unaware of the purpose of the men’s journey. “We only knew that Chand is a driver.”
