The call for a caste-based census has been a persistent demand from various opposition parties, spearheaded by Congress, with many including it in their electoral manifestos
On Wednesday, Congress asserted that it was responsible for the central government’s decision to incorporate a caste survey in the forthcoming population census, emphasizing that this has been a longstanding demand of the party.
During a briefing in New Delhi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the government’s decision. This was at the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). He also criticized the Congress for politicising the issue.
The call for a caste-based census has been a persistent demand from various opposition parties, spearheaded by Congress, with many including it in their electoral manifestos.
In reaction to the Centre’s announcement, numerous political parties and leaders expressed their support. This is for the inclusion of caste data in the upcoming national survey.
“The timing is very interesting. We hope there is some sincerity behind the decision,” said Congress leader Pawan Khera, while speaking to CNN News18.
Khera also mentioned about Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He said that he has been a steadfast advocate for a caste census.
“We cannot forget Rahul Gandhi’s famous words – ‘Jaati janganna hoke rahegi’ (The caste census will happen). I will say the government is with Rahul Gandhi,” Khera added.
Union minister Nityanand Rai wrote, “This reflects that the current government is committed to the all-round development and values of the country and society. Even earlier, when 10% reservation was provided to the poor sections of society, it was widely accepted in society, and no kind of social tension arose. Heartfelt gratitude to the Honorable Prime Minister.”
Congress leader Udit Raj said on X, “The Modi government has been compelled to conduct a caste census. This is a victory for Congress. The Bahujan community thanks Rahul Gandhi ji, his persistent efforts have borne fruit. The BJP/RSS tried hard to stop it, but in the end, they had to yield.”
