The Election Commission has filed a case against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya for posting a video on X and seeking votes on the grounds of religion, said the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka on Friday.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka posted on X, and I quote, “Case is booked against Tejasvi Surya MP and Candidate of Bengaluru South PC on 25.04.24 at Jayanagar PS u/s 123(3) for posting a video in X handle and soliciting votes on the ground of religion,”

Tejasvi Surya, who is running for re-election from the Bengaluru South seat, stated on Thursday that although 80 per cent of people support the BJP, only 20 per cent actually vote for it. Conversely, he mentioned that the Congress has the support of only 20 per cent of people, but 80 per cent of them vote for the party.

Bengaluru South, a key constituency known for its significance in the Silicon Valley of India, will witness a fierce battle between BJP’s Tejasvi Surya and Congress’ Sowmya Reddy in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. With its history as a BJP stronghold since 1991, this election presents a spirited challenge for Surya from Reddy, daughter of state transport minister Ramalinga Reddy. As the constituency gears up for polls on April 26, both candidates are vying for support across diverse communities in the area.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya also found himself in the midst of controversy on April 16 following a meeting with voters that took an unexpected turn. The incident occurred during what was intended as a meet-and-greet session but quickly escalated, leading to Surya’s abrupt departure from the venue and sparking outrage among attendees.

Subsequently, aggrieved customers of the Shri Guru Raghavendra Cooperative Bank lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI). The complaint specifically targeted several BJP leaders, including Tejasvi Surya, his uncle Ravi Subramanya, and a local party official named Girish, along with poll officials.

The backdrop to this development lies in a cooperative meeting held in Basavanagudi, where Surya faced questioning from victims of the Shri Guru Raghavendra Cooperative Bank financial scandal. This scam, which came to light four years ago, involves approximately 8,000 customers who are still awaiting compensation from the bank, with each having deposits exceeding ₹5 lakh.

The incident highlights the deep-seated frustrations of bank depositors affected by the cooperative bank scandal and underscores the ongoing challenges faced by politicians in addressing their grievances.
