K.Surendran Contesting LS Polls Against Rahul Gandhi Faces 242 Criminal Cases

K Surendran, the head of BJP in Kerala and also the NDA candidate competing against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the Wayanad Lok Sabha area, has 242 criminal cases filed against him.

Surendran recently shared detailed information about these cases to fulfil legal obligations in the party’s official publication, which took up three pages.

Similarly, K S Radhakrishnan, who is contesting on a BJP ticket in the Ernakulam constituency, is facing around 211 legal cases.

According to a report, George Kurian, the state general secretary of the BJP, mentioned that most of the cases against K Surendran and K S Radhakrishnan are linked to the Sabarimala protests of 2018. Kurian explained that when party leaders organize strikes or protests, it often leads to the police registering cases in connection with those events. He added that the majority of these cases are currently being processed in court.

Kurian, explaining the cases against the BJP state chief, mentioned that out of the total, 237 cases were linked to the Sabarimala protests. At the same time, five were connected to different demonstrations across Kerala.

In 2018, the BJP and its associated parties arranged protests across Kerala. These protests were against the Kerala government’s move to enforce the Supreme Court’s decision allowing women to enter the Sabarimala shrine in the Pathanamthitta district.

Details of cases against other party candidates are still awaited.

The last day to submit nominations for the Lok Sabha elections is April 4th. Nominations will be checked on April 5th, and candidates can withdraw until April 8th.

As per an analysis conducted by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of the 514 current Lok Sabha MPs examined 225 of them, or 44 per cent, have declared criminal cases against themselves in self-sworn affidavits. Additionally, among those scrutinized, 5 percent are billionaires holding assets exceeding Rs 100 crore.

The ADR report also disclosed that among those with criminal charges, 29 per cent are facing serious criminal cases. These serious charges include allegations such as murder, attempted murder, fostering communal disharmony, kidnapping, and crimes against women.

Furthermore, out of the MPs facing serious criminal charges, nine are involved in murder cases. The analysis also revealed that five of these MPs are affiliated with the BJP.

Additionally, 28 current MPs have cases linked to attempted murder, with the majority, 21 MPs, affiliated with the BJP.

Similarly, 16 MPs are accused of crimes against women, including three facing rape charges.

As the Lok Sabha elections near, details about criminal cases against important candidates and their financial status are in focus.
