Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna Suspended From JDS Over Sex Scandal

On April 30, the Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna was suspended from the Janata Dal (Secular), that is, JD(S), because of a controversy about explicit videos. These videos supposedly show him sexually assaulting several women.

Prajwal Revanna, who represents Karnataka’s Hassan constituency, also received a show-cause notice from the party. The video clips, allegedly featuring Prajwal Revanna, appeared on social media just after his constituency voted in the polls.

Following the scandal, it’s been claimed that hundreds of explicit videos were allegedly recorded by Mr Revanna, who is the grandson of JDS chief and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. These videos were widely circulated within the Hassan constituency.

Subsequently, a woman filed a police case against Prajwal Revanna, accusing him of sexual assault. She stated that she had been sexually abused multiple times between 2019 and 2022. The complainant further alleged that Prajwal Revanna had behaved inappropriately with her daughter over a video call and had engaged in “vulgar conversations” with her.

Moreover, the woman claimed that Prajwal’s father, HD Revanna, also sexually assaulted her when his wife was not at home.

Prajwal has refuted the allegations and filed a complaint asserting that the circulated videos are doctored.
The 33-year-old departed for Germany on Saturday morning, shortly after the videos surfaced online.

Prajwal’s father, HD Revanna, who is also implicated in the case, is an MLA from the Holenarasipur constituency.

HD Revanna has also accused political opponents of fabricating a conspiracy using “old videos.”
In response to the scandal, the Karnataka government has established a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the obscene videos case. This decision followed a recommendation from the state women’s commission to the Siddaramaiah government to take action.

Regarding reports of Prajwal leaving the country while the investigation is ongoing, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated yesterday that the SIT would summon Prajwal back to India.

The chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, Nagalakshmi Choudhary, disclosed that the pen drive she received contained hundreds of explicit videos, some purportedly featuring the sitting MP from Hassan.

Additionally, BJP Leader Devaraje Gowda, who was the party’s candidate for Holenarsipura during the 2023 Assembly elections, asserted that he had written to the then-state president BY Vijayendra in December last year, raising “serious allegations” against the HD Deve Gowda family, including Prajwal Revanna.

He claimed to have received a pen drive containing 2,976 explicit videos of women, allegedly being used for blackmail purposes to coerce them into further sexual activities.
