Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Phase 4

Voting is currently taking place for the fourth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections across 96 seats in 10 states and Union Territories. Todayโ€™s spotlight is on West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, where numerous high-profile candidates compete.

In Bengal, where previous rounds of voting have been overshadowed by violence, a Trinamool Congress worker lost his life in a crude bomb attack. The tragic incident occurred in the Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency just hours before polling commenced.

  • 2024 Polls Phase 5: 36.73% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 1 pm

    A voter turnout of 36.73 percent was recorded in phase 5 till 1 pm as per the Election Commissionโ€™s Voter Turnout App with the highest polling percentage in Ladakh (52.02%) and the lowest in Maharashtra (27.78%).

    Hours after a video became viral of the Hyderabad Bharatiya Janata Party contestant Madhavi Latha Kompella demanding burqa-clad voters to show their faces, the Malakpet police registered a case against her. The incident panned out at a polling station in Malakpet.

    At 1 pm, 40.32% voter turnout was recorded across 10 states and union territories. Polling is being held in all 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, all 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 13 in Uttar Pradesh, five in Bihar, four in Jharkhand, eight in Madhya Pradesh, 11 in Maharashtra, four in Odisha, eight in West Bengal and one in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, polling for the Srinagar seat marks the first major election in Jammu and Kashmir since abrogation of Article 370.

Additionally, TMCโ€™s Mahua Moitra, who faced expulsion from Lok Sabha over cash-for-query allegations, is seeking re-election from the Krishnanagar seat, competing against erstwhile royal Amrita Roy, fielded by the BJP.

    In Uttar Pradesh, one of the key contests involves former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav vying for the Kannauj seat. Meanwhile, Union Minister Ajay Misra Teni, whose son is implicated in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, is aiming for a third consecutive win from his constituency.

  • Violence In West Bengal Amid Polling

    Once again, West Bengal saw isolated incidents of violence on polling day, with both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP pointing fingers at each other for the clashes. During the polling process, instances of clashes between workers of the two parties were reported in Durgapur. In Birbhum, the BJP alleged that TMC activists vandalized their booth outside a polling station.

  • Elections Phase 4: Voter Turnout

    In the initial two polling hours, voter participation stood at 10.35 per cent. West Bengal led with a turnout of 15.24 percent, while Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest turnout, at 5.07 percent.

    Voting is underway concurrently across all 175 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and 28 legislative assembly seats in Odisha.

    Voting has been completed in three stages across 283 Lok Sabha constituencies spanning 20 states and Union Territories. Vote tallying is slated for June 4th.
