Manipur: Nitish Kumar's JDU Pulls Out Of BJP-led Govt

In a shocking development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal-United formally withdrew its support from the N Biren Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in Manipur on Wednesday.

According to reports, the party’s unit president in Manipur issued a formal letter. Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, JD(U), announced that the party will no longer support the BJP-led state government in Manipur.

However, the reason Nitish Kumar decided to withdraw JDU support from the BJP-led government has not yet been declared. Kshetrimayum Biren Singh heads Manipur’s JDU unit. He wrote to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to inform him of the development.

Reports suggest that the letter was also addressed to Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh. It stated that their lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir would now be treated as an opposition MLA in the House.

JD(U)’s Manipur unit letter stated: “It is, hereby, further reiterated that Janata Dal (United), Manipur Unit does not support the BJP-led state government in Manipur, and our lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir shall be treated as an opposition MLA in the House”.

However, this development will not impact the stability of the government. However, it definitely sends a strong message. The JDU is the BJP’s key ally at the Centre and in Bihar, where Assembly polls are due this year.

He further wrote, “In the election to the State Assembly of Manipur held in February/March 2022, six candidates set up by Janata Dal(United) were returned. “As such, the seating arrangement of the lone MLA of Janata Dal(United) in Manipur, Md. Abdul Nasir is made in the Opposition Bench in the last session of the Assembly by the Speaker,”

According to reports, Nitish Kumar’s JDU won 12 seats in this year’s general election. It is also believed that it is among the key allies whose support helped the BJP reach the majority mark after its seat tally dropped this time.

The JDU president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is known for his flip-flops across the political divide. Nitish rejoined the NDA fold last year after being one of the key players in the INDIA Opposition bloc.

The NPP chief further wrote, “Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led Government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect”.
