After more than 2 months of the Delhi MCD polls and the Delhi Municipal house getting adjourned thrice without electing a mayor, the MCD finally elected its new mayor on Wednesday.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won and Its candidate Shelly Oberoi was declared the new mayor of Delhi after three failed attempts in the past to hold voting. The BJP was ruling the civic body for 15 years. Oberoi received 150 votes against BJP candidate Rekha Gupta who got 116 votes.
Now let’s know who is Shelly Oberoi?
Shelly Oberoi, a former Delhi University professor, is a first-time councillor who won the Delhi civic body election from the East Patel Nagar ward. The 39-year-old has studied management from IIM, Kozhikode.
Shelly Oberoi has been associated with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party since 2014 and was named the vice president of the party’s Mahila Morcha (woman wing) in 2020.

Ms. Oberoi is a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association (ICA). She did her Ph.D. at Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) School of Management Studies. She won several awards in different conferences.

“The members of Delhi’s civic body appointed by the Lieutenant Governor cannot vote in the election to choose a mayor”. The Supreme Court had said earlier last week.
“Goons have lost people have won.” AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said congratulating the newly elected mayor.
