The Lakhimpur Kheri court has summoned Zubair in court on July 11,” Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sanjeev Suman said, adding that it was the jail officials’ responsibility to produce Zubair in court.
Lucknow: Hours after the supreme court granted five days ‘interim bail to Journalist and Alt News Co-founder Mohammed Zubair in a case filed in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh for hurting religious sentiments through a tweet, the Lakhimpur Kheri police obtained a warrant against Zubair in a case registered at Mohamedi police station last year on charges of prompting enmity between two groups.
The Lakhimpur Kheri court has summoned Zubair to appear before it on July 11.
The Lakhimpur Kheri case was lodged in September last year on a court directive. On Friday, the Lakhimpur Kheri police moved a local court, obtained a warrant against Zubair, and served the warrant at Sitapur district jail, where he is lodged.
“The Lakhimpur Kheri court has summoned Zubair in court on July 11,” Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sanjeev Suman said, adding that it was the jail officials’ responsibility to produce Zubair in court.
“Ashish Kumar Katiyar filed a case accusing Zubair of circulating false news on Twitter in order to disturb communal harmony. Accordingly, a case was lodged against Zubair under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between two groups) of the Indian Penal Code.”, according to the police.
Two days ago, Zubair was brought to Sitapur from Delhi, where he was lodged in jail in connection with a separate case filed last week. Delhi Police produced Zubair before a local court in Sitapur, which sent him to six days’ police custody remand in the Sitapur case.
When contacted, Sitapur jail superintendent Suresh Singh said that Sitapur police on Friday morning took Zubair’s custody. “A few hours later, Sitapur police brought Zubair back to jail. Following the court directive, Zubair has been granted bail in the Sitapur case. Now, two warrants – one each of Delhi and Lakhimpur Kheri—are pending against Zubair,” the superintendent said.
He added that they would soon decide where to send Zubair now. “Zubair has not been granted bail in the case lodged against him in Delhi and Lakhimpur Kheri,” the superintendent said.
