Pahalgam Attack: Congress Leader Kharge: ‘PM Modi Knew’

Pahalgam Attack: Congress

At a rally in Jharkhand, Kharge further stated that the BJP-led Central government acknowledged that an intelligence failure had caused the attack

On Tuesday, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled his trip to Jammu and Kashmir last month due to an intelligence report received three days prior to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Speaking at a rally in Jharkhand, Kharge further stated that the BJP-led Central government acknowledged that the attack stemmed from an intelligence failure.

He noted that the government conceded there was a lapse in intelligence regarding the attack. This resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals as terrorists opened fire on tourists vacationing in Pahalgam.

Kharge said, “There is an intelligence failure; the government has accepted it, and they will resolve it. If they knew this, why didn’t they do anything? I got information that three days before the attack, an intelligence report was sent to PM Modi, and therefore, he cancelled his programme to visit Kashmir. I also read this in a newspaper.”

He added, “Congress stands with the government for any action against Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. The country is supreme.”

According to reports from India Today, reports informed that during a closed-door all-party meeting on April 24, the central government acknowledged security shortcomings related to the Pahalgam terror incident.

In response to inquiries from Opposition leaders, the government reportedly indicated that local authorities did not notify security agencies. This they said was before they allowed access to the Baisaran area near Pahalgam in Anantnag district. Until the Amarnath Yatra in June, these regions are typically restricted for people to visit.

Kharge questioned the Centre. This related to why the government did not deploy additional security in Pahalgam. And it being so because it possessed the intelligence report, as reported by PTI.

“Shouldn’t the Centre be accountable for loss of lives in the Pahalgam attack when it accepted intelligence failure,” Kharge concluded.

HT reported on May 4 that the intelligence bureau (IB) and other agencies had warned local security personnel. This was in Jammu and Kashmir and was about the potential for an attack targeting tourists. This coincided with the Prime Minister’s planned visit to the union territory (UT) on April 19, and to Srinagar. However, inclement weather, caused the cancellation of PM Modi’s visit. A few days later the terrorists launched their attack in Pahalgam, located 90 km from Srinagar, on April 22.
