A 19-year-old man was fatally beaten in Punjab’s Ferozepur after allegedly tearing pages from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, at a local gurdwara. Identified as Bakshish Singh, he committed the act at Gurdwara Baba Bir Singh in Bandala village, triggering outrage among villagers.
Bakshish, who was reportedly mentally challenged and on medication, was caught and assaulted by an angry mob. Despite being taken to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. His father called for justice, highlighting his son’s mental health condition.
The incident has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of laws to prevent blasphemy. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh lamented the failure of laws to curb such incidents and attributed Bakshish’s death to this failure. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhwinder Singh, the situation has since been brought under control.
