Mumbai: Congress MP and wordsmith Shashi Tharoor received France’s highest civilian honour, the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour), for his writings and speeches. The French ambassador in New Delhi wrote to Tharoor informing him of the honour.

The French Order of Merit, instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is awarded for exceptional civil or military conduct.

Congratulations and praises for Tharoor came in, the MP took to his Twitter saying, “As one who cherishes our relations with France, loves the language and admires the culture, I am honoured to be recognized in this way. My gratitude and appreciation to those who have seen fit to award me this distinction.”

The honour will be bestowed upon him when any French minister visits India next. Last year Tharoor delivered a speech in French at Alliance Francaise.

In 2010, Tharoor had received a similar honour from the Spanish government, when the King of Spain had bestowed upon him the Encomienda de la Real Order Espanola de Carlos III. Tharoor is also a former diplomat with a 23-year-long career in the United Nations. He is also a celebrated author with several fiction and non-fiction books under his belt.

The Congress leader is also known for throwing in rarely used English words into his Twitter posts that leaves netizens scratching their heads.
