New Delhi: Social media users have responded furiously to a documentary poster for Leena Manimekalai’s film because of how Goddess Kali is depicted. A police complaint claims that the filmmaker offended religious sensitivities.

The movie’s poster was released on Saturday by Leena Manimekalai, who was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and now calls Toronto home. The poster features a woman smoking while wearing a Kali-inspired outfit. The LGBT community’s flag may be seen in the distance.

The “Gau Mahasabha” led by Ajay Gautam, has requested an FIR against the director and a ban on the movie in a complaint registered with the Delhi Police and the Home Ministry.

“I have nothing to lose. I want to be with a voice that speaks without fear of anything until it is. If the price is my life, I will give it,” Leena Manimekalai tweeted against comments slamming her.

According to a tweet from the director, the movie was included in the “Rhythms of Canada” section of the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.

Leena tweeted, “Super thrilled to share the launch of my recent film – today at @AgaKhanMuseum as part of its ‘Rhythms of Canada’. Feeling pumped with my CREW,”.

“The film revolves around the events that take place one evening when Kali appears and strolls the streets of Toronto. If you see the picture, don’t put the hashtag ‘arrest Leena manimekalai’ but put the hashtag ‘love you Leena manimekalai’,” she wrote in Tamil on Twitter.

In response to trolls and negative comments, the director has now restricted comments on her Instagram page.
