A shocking case related to the banking system has come to light in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Notes of 42 lakh rupees melted in the currency chest kept in the branch of Punjab National Bank located in Pandu Nagar of Kanpur city. In this case, four officers of the bank have been charged and suspended, Jansatta reported.

Rs 42 lakh notes were kept in an iron box on the floor of the chest. These notes got melted due to the dampness. The bank officers kept trying to cover up this matter but when the audit was done, the matter came to fore. On the loss of cash, the bank management has taken action against four officers in the chest. Management has cited paucity of funds for the action.

The matter came to light when RBI inspected the chest and found that the notes were rotten. Initially, the notes were estimated to be four to five lakhs, but after counting the notes, the value came out to be of 42 lakhs. In this case, senior manager of currency chest Devi Shankar, chest officer Rakesh Kumar, senior manager Bhaskar Kumar Bhargava and manager Asharam were suspended. Three out of these four officers were posted in the chest after the notes melted.

It was told that due to lack of space to keep cash in the bank’s vault, the notes were kept in boxes and kept against the wall. But due to the dampness in the basement wall due to rain, the water went inside the box. The boxes were not opened for a long time and as a result the currency of 42 lakhs got lost.

From July 25 to July 29, 2022, RBI officials checked the currency chest of the branch. During investigation, the officials found a shortfall of Rs 14,74,500 and a difference of Rs 10 lakh between the maximum and minimum amount. In their report, the officials had informed about the breakdown of 79 bundles of Rs 10 and 49 bundles of Rs 20. At the same time, when the notes were counted, it was found that the notes of 42 lakh rupees have been lost.
