10 percent reservation bill is an acknowledgment of guilt that govt failed to provide jobs: Derek O’Brien

New Delhi | Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien on Wednesday during the debate on the Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha said that the bill is an acknowledgment of guilt that the government failed to create any jobs in last 4 and a half years.

Speaking on the bill O’Brien questioned that the bill draws new parameter for the poverty line in India. He said,” This bill is an acknowledgment of guilt, that we haven’t created any jobs in last 4 & a half years. It redefines India’s poverty line of Rs 32 a day, if we look at the number of Rs 8 lakhs a year, the new poverty line is Rs 2100 a day.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019 which will provide reservation for economically weaker section of the society in higher educational institutions. Out of the 326 member present for voting, 323 members voted in favour of the bill while only 3 members voted in opposition to the bill.

In a major move ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Union Cabinet on December 7 cleared a 10 percent job and education quota for “economically weaker” sections of upper castes. The proposed reservation will be over and above the existing 50 percent reservation enjoyed by the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes, taking the total reservation to 60 percent.
