Delhi| More than 100 alumni of Delhi School of Social Work-DSSW’s Department of Social Work have written a letter condemning BJP’s Kapil Mishra’s speeches and remarks. Kapil Mishra is also an alumnus of DSSW. Alumni belonging to different batches have written in demanding strict actions should be taken against Kapil Mishra.
107 Alumni have undersigned the letter in which they have condemned Kapil Mishra for his inciting speeches and remarks suggesting that it led to communal tensions in Delhi.
Sharing the links of Kapil Mishra’s inciting speeches and remark, the letter suggests that many groups have accused Kapil Mishra of inciting communal tensions through his speeches, and issuing warnings to a group of protestors who were agitating the CAA, NRC, and NPR.
Referring to the warning Kapil Mishra issued for protestors in the presence of a DCP, the letter says that Mishra has been at the epicenter of communal hate-mongering, rather been engaged with it on several accounts.
The letter also highlights Mishra’s India-Pakistan remark he made during the Delhi assembly elections campaign.
The letter further says, “Delhi Election Commission on 23rd January 2020 took cognizance of these statements by condemning them and subsequently banning him from campaigning. Even now he continues with his jingoist propaganda through his protest at Jantar Mantar with placards displaying ‘Delhi Against Jehadi Violence’ besides raising slogans “shoot the traitors”.”
The alumni have iterated that they are in abject dismay that how an alumnus of their Department is capable of such irresponsibility.
The letter further sheds light on the violence that took place in Delhi and states, “His incitation led to the worst form of a humanitarian tragedy in decades, as rioting mobs burnt down homes, businesses, schools besides desecrating places of religious worship. It has left hundreds homeless, many more wounded and approximately 46 dead thereby making it a crisis. This tragedy has affected young, old and women to a great magnitude. Today, the victims continue to pay the price of a communally charged hate speech with their lives and livelihoods. The plight of those grievously injured and languishing in temporary relief camps bears testimony of such incitation.”
The letter demands legal action against Mishra and others who gave inciting speeches, stressing on the necessity of free and fair probe by an independent enquiry commission.
It also urges BJP leadership to take actions and says, “We demand Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leadership to take action against Kapil Mishra and other party workers accused of hate speeches, as the party continues to enjoy majority confidence since 2014. We strongly believe that the leadership will address this issue without loss of time.”
The letter also demanded immediate identification of rioters with fast track courts probing the Delhi Riots.
The letter concludes with, “We the undersigned alumni of DSSW thereby unequivocally condemn the speech and act of Kapil Mishra and the violence that follow besides demanding restitutive measures for the victims of violence. We also stand in solidarity with the current president of DSSW Students’ Union who took a strong stand against the culture of hate.”
The letter in postscript has stated that the statement is of only undersigned alumni and does not represent all groups of alumni.
