Meanwhile, memories of the Chipko Movement were afresh. Here a social worker hugged a tree that was about to be cut. The Chipko movement was done to protect the environment. The movement started in 1973 in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand under the leadership of India’s popular environmentalists Sundarlal Bahuguna, Chandiprasad Bhatt and Gaura Devi. The special feature of this movement was that more women than men played an active role in it and when people came to cut trees with axes in their hands, women clung to the trees. That is why the movement got its name ‘Chipko Andolan’.
