Agnipath Protests: Youth Congress Workers Stop Train In Delhi

“The government needs to roll back the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. Youth Congress will fight for the unemployed youth who want to serve the country.”

New Delhi: Indian Youth Congress workers on Monday stopped a train at the Shivaji Bridge railway station near Connaught Place, in Delhi while protesting in demand the repealing the Agnipath defense recruitment scheme.

According to sources, The track was cleared by police and security personnel and train movement restarted after almost half an hour.

Several protesters were detained as police personnel attempted to move them from the tracks and the station, a senior police official said.

“The government needs to roll back the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. Youth Congress will fight for the unemployed youth who want to serve the country,” Youth Congress president Srinivas BV said while interacting with the reporters.

What is the Agneepath Scheme and What changes has the Government made?

Agneepath military recruitment scheme was announced by the Indian government in which army aspirants between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years would get an opportunity to work with the Indian armed forces. It will be a four-year employment program at the end of which 25 percent of the recruits will be retained for regular service. While the rest 75 percent will be forced to retire. The recruits will be called ‘Agniveers’.

The upper age limit has now been increased to 23  from 21 only for this year’s hindrance in hiring because of the pandemic.  Also, a proposal to reserve 10 per cent of the job vacancies in the Ministry of Defence has been approved. Also, Union Home minister Amit Shah has announced that his ministry has decided to give priority to “Agniveers” who will have completed four years of tenure.

Meanwhile, Mahindra group chairman Aanand Mahindra and RPG Group chairman Harsh Goenka have also promised preference for Agniveers.
