Ahead of Nobel winner Abhijeet Banerjee’s meet with PM Modi, BJP warns Bengal cadre not to make remarks against him

On the day, Nobel prize in Economics was announced, Abhijeet Banerjee had criticized the present Modi government saying that “Indian Economy is on shaky ground”.

Kolkata: Nobel Prize Winner Abhijeet Banerjee is in India. Past few days he spent going to his alma mater Jawaharlal Nehru University and giving scores of interviews to news channels. Today, he will visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On the day, Nobel prize in Economics was announced, Abhijeet Banerjee had criticized the present Modi government saying that “Indian Economy is on shaky ground”. He had also said that India’s growth rate might fall below 5%.

Piyush Goyal’s criticism

His criticism has not gone down well with the several BJP leaders who criticized his economic policies. Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had also rejected his claims of Economic Slowdown citing that Banerjee is “left-leaning”. He also said that his idea of ‘NYAY‘ which made it to the Congress Manifesto was rejected by Indian people.

BJP Bengal warns cadre of negative remarks against him

However, ahead of his visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP seems to be reining in its cadre. The BJP in West Bengal has asked its members to refrain from making any “unwarranted” remark against the noble prize winner and economist.

Apparently, the message was delivered to cadres that criticism of Banerjee who hails from Kolkata might not go down well with the people of the state. It may also dent BJP’s plan to unseat the TMC in the state in the upcoming 2021 assembly elections.

According to state BJP sources, the “unsavoury” comments by a section of the state and central leaders against Banerjee have not gone down well with the people of Bengal. The criticism has been perceived as an attempt to fuel “anti-Bengali” sentiments.
