Article 370: Sitaram Yechury, D Raja detained at Srinagar airport

Sitaram Yechury and D Raja had gone to meet their party colleagues in Srinagar. Yechury claimed that the security personnel stopped them at the airport.

 

New Delhi| Days after parliament passed the bill to remove Article 370 from J&K, political leaders are still not being allowed to enter Kashmir. On Thursday, senior Congress leader and Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad was detained at Srinagar airport. He was accompanied by Congress’ J&K chief. In the latest development, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI leader D Raja were stopped at Srinagar airport. Reportedly, they were not allowed to enter the city.

Sitaram Yechury and D Raja had gone to meet their party colleagues in Srinagar. Yechury claimed that the security personnel stopped them at the airport and showed them a legal order. “It stated that even escorted movement int the city was not permitted due to security reasons. We are still trying to negotiate with them,” Yechury told a news agency.

Both had written a letter to Satya Pal Malik:

Yechury told the news agency that both had planned the visit and had also informed about it to J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik. He said they had written a letter to Malik informing their arrival. They had requested him to facilitate their entry.

CPI(M) condemns the action:

Meanwhile, CPI(M) has registered a strong protest against govt’s move to detain the political leaders calling it “illegal”. Taking it to Twitter, the party said, “Sitaram Yechury is being detained at Srinagar Airport and not allowed to move anywhere. This despite the fact that he had informed the administration about his visit to meet CPIM MLA MY Tarigami who is not well & other party workers. We strongly protest this illegal detention.”

Valley leaders in house arrest:

Several opposition parties have already condemned the govt’s move to put valley leaders under house arrest. Reportedly, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, leader Sajjad Lone have been under house arrest since Monday. The opposition has slammed govt’s move calling it “Unconstitutional”.
