‘Who benefited most from attack?’: Rahul Gandhi on Pulwama Anniversary

The tweet was in reference to political narrative built after the Pulwama attack by the saffron party around patriotism during the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

New Delhi| A year after 40 CRPF soldiers were killed in Pulwama terror attack, on Friday Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the Narendra Modi-led government asking what was the result of the inquiry and who had benefitted from the attack.

“I want to tell the first-time voters: can your first vote be dedicated to the veer jawans (valiant soldiers) who carried out the air strike in Pakistan. Can your first vote be dedicated to the veer shaheed (brave martyrs) of Pulwama (terror attack),” Modi had said during campaigning for 2019 Lok Sabha Polls.

Gandhi also asked who in the BJP government had been held accountable for the security lapses that allowed the attack.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country will never forget the sacrifice of the 40 CRPF personnel in the Pulwama attack. “Tributes to the brave martyrs who lost their lives in the gruesome Pulwama attack last year. They were exceptional individuals who devoted their lives to serving and protecting our nation. India will never forget their martyrdom,” he tweeted.

In February 2019, at least 40 CRPF jawans were killed after the convoy of 78 buses, in which around 2,500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, came under attack.

Jaish-e-Mohammad had claimed responsibility for the attack. In response to the attack, India launched airstrikes at JeM training camps in Balakot before dawn on February 26.

Following the dastardly attack, India had launched extensive diplomatic efforts to get JeM chief Masood Azhar designated as a global terrorist, which finally became a reality on May 1 last year when China lifted its technical hold on a proposal introduced by the US, the UK, and France in the 1267 Committee of the UN Security Council.

On Wednesday, the National Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet against four JeM aides of Pulwama attack mastermind, in a case of conspiring for terror acts across the country.
