Bhindranwale, Referendum 2020 poster in Pak govt’s Kartarpur video song sparks new controversy

As pilgrim begins this week and a video song on Kartarpur Corridor released by the Pakistan government a day ago has landed on a fresh controversy

Chandigarh: The Kartarpur corridor which facilitates Sikh pilgrims in India to visit the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara in Pakistan will be opened this week. Ahead of the landmark event, around 2,000 Sikh pilgrims arrived at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Pakistan’s Punjab province to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan government released a song on Kartarpur corridor. The video attempts to show Pakistan’s effort to make the Sikh community’s visit to Kartarpur visa-free, something which hasn’t happened in the last 70 years. Instead, the song has landed into afresh controversy given the references of Khalistani separatists in the video.

The opening of the song features Pakistan PM Imran Khan and a clip of his speech when he made the announcement of building a corridor for Kartarpur pilgrims. It also features Sikh pilgrims and several Gurudwaras in the country. However, the video went viral on social media and several pointed out the reference to Khalistani leaders.

A poster displayed in the video’s background shows Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Amrik Singh Khalsa and Major General Dismissed Shabeg Singh. All these Khalistani separatist leaders were killed during Operation Blue Star in June 1984.

Earlier Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had also cautioned that Pakistan cannot be trusted for its newfound love for Indian Sikh community and the Kartarpur corridor could be misused by ISI.
