BJP’s upset Dalit MPs including a cabinet minister met Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment and asked him to take up the matter to PM Modi.

In a fresh trouble for the ruling BJP, party’s Dalit MPs seem to be upset with the leadership over the statement given by Supreme Court regarding the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities ) act. The dalit MPs also want the party which is running the central government to file a review petition against the ruling of the Apex court.

Reportedly, the BJP MPs have also met Thaawar Chand Gehlot- Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment on Wednesday. According to the sources, the MPs including a minister in Narendra Modi government have asked him to pursue the matter and talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The misuse of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act has been quite a debated topic last year. Taking cognizance of such cases, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued certain guidelines before making arrests in such cases. It also made some provisions for anticipatory bail, “preliminary enquiry” before registering a case, and prior sanction before the arrest.

Yesterday, the opposition Congress too expressed regret over the Supreme Court’s decision and asked Centre to file a review petition. Lashing out at the ruling BJP, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said that there has been increase in the Atrocities on the Dalit community under this government. Terming it an issue of national interest, Sharma further said, “There is a feeling of insecurity among SCs, STs and other oppressed classes. “

Congress President Rahul Gandhi too attacked the BJP saying the “complicit” government failed to defend the important act in the Supreme Court. He tweeted, “The SC/ST Act is the most important instrument to prevent atrocities on Dalits/Adivasis. A complicit Modi Govt failed to defend it in the Supreme Court. The PM must not abdicate his duty in favour of the anti-Dalit mindset of the BJP/RSS.”

On the other hand, Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has assured that he would first study the order and understand the nuances before taking any further step.
