The BJP saw a steep reduction in the tally during this year’s civic polls as it plummeted to 47 municipalities from previous 59.
Close on the heels of Gujarat Assembly Elections of 2017 where the BJP emerged victorious although, with less number of seats, the Gujarat Civic polls too showed the same picture.
The results of the civic polls held in the state on February 17 were announced on Monday. Continuing its winning streak, BJP registered a victory on the 47 municipalities out of total 75 municipalities in Gujarat.
On the other hand, opposition Congress which had put up a strong fight against incumbent BJP in Assembly elections had to satisfy itself on 16 nagarpalikas or municipalities only. While independent candidates won six civic polls, others won four of them.

The Congress improved the performance by adding five more Municipalities to the tally than previous 11, won during the 2013 Gujarat civic polls. The tally of Congress in 2013 stumbled to eight after five of its leaders defected to BJP. On the other hand, BJP saw a steep reduction in the tally during this year’s civic polls as it plummeted to 47 municipalities from previous 59.
While Congress continued to dominate the Saurashtra-Kutch region, it had to face defeat in the tribal belt where it has senior leaders such as Naran Rathwa. The OBC Congress leader Alpesh Thakor lauding the party’s improved performance said, “Win in the number of nagarpalikas and the total number of councillors has gone up for the Congress. The party has kept up its impressive run after the assembly elections.”

However, BJP state President Jitu Vaghani denied the Congress’ improvement and said the people of Gujarat have, in fact, rejected it once again. During the Assembly election, Congress had successfully capped BJP’s victory march to 99 from previous 117 seats in the 182 member assembly.
