Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced his support for NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday.
Mr. Thackeray announced that the Shiv Sena was backing Murmu over the Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.
“There has been absolutely no pressure from the MPs, as claimed in the media. However, many Sena leaders and office-bearers from tribal communities have requested us. We have decided to support Draupadi Murmu for the President`s elections,” Mr. Thackeray told the media.
“Our society is getting a different identity. Tribals can also be not only tribals but also the highest office in the country.”Mr. Thackeray added.
Mr. Thackeray further said, “Tribal leaders of my party told me that this is the first time a tribal woman has a chance to become President of India,” he said, insisting, “Nobody pressured me in the meeting of Sena MPs.”
“Actually, going by the present political atmosphere, I should not have backed her,” “But we are not narrow-minded,” he said.
The announcement comes a day after thirteen of the 18 Lok Sabha MPs of the Thackeray faction on Monday urged party chief Uddhav Thackeray to support Ms. Murmu in the key meeting on the Presidential elections, according to sources.
