BSP welcomes 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections of upper castes: Mayawati

New Delhi | Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday welcomed the Union government’s decision of 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections of Upper castes.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Mayawati, however, called the move a political stunt. She said,” The decision taken by the Central government is good but the intention behind this decision seems not to be good. It looks more of a political stunt as it has just come ahead of the Lok Sabha election. It would have been better if the government had taken this decision earlier.”

Demanding reservation should be extended to poor belonging to various minority religious groups, Mayawati said,” Reservation to the poor, tribals and Dalits should not be confined to education sector or jobs but also to other sectors in which it has not been introduced yet.” Mayawati further stated that reservation for SC, ST and Dalits should be increased to 50% citing the increasing population.

In a major move ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Union Cabinet on December 7 cleared a 10 percent job and education quota for “economically weaker” sections of upper castes. The proposed reservation will be over and above the existing 50 percent reservation enjoyed by the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes, taking the total reservation to 60 percent.
