Mallikarjun Kharge said in the petition that the move to sack CBI Director was “illegal” and said it is in violation of the CBI Act.

New Delhi| The CBI vs CBI row on Saturday got a new twist as Congress jumped in the controversy supporting the CBI director Alok Verma. The leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge moved Supreme Court challenging government’s decision to send CBI Director Alok Verma on leave. He even termed the move to be “illegal” and said it is in violation of the CBI Act.

After the public fallout between two topmost CBI officials- Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana, the government on October 23 sent both of them on “forced leave”. Alok Verma had challenged the plea in Supreme Court.

Kharge, in his petition, noted that the decision of appointment or removal of the CBI director can only be taken by a three-member committee of the leader of the opposition, prime minister and the Chief Justice of India. He also mentioned that the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) does not yield the power to take any action against the CBI Director.

Talking to a news agency, Kharge said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suo moto action of sending CBI director Alok Verma on leave is illegal and is in violation of the CBI Act.” According to the party sources, Kharge had filed a petition in this regard on behalf of the Congress party.
