At least five chief ministers on Friday declared that they would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill that has agenda to divide the country. It has also left parts of northeastern India into chaos. Theses are some opinions of respective CM of states which are not going to implement CAB.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee
Taking jibe at the BJP-led Centre over the amended Citizenship Act, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said she would not allow its implementation in the state “under any circumstances”. Addressing media in Digha, Mamata Banerjee, said the BJP can’t bulldoze the states to implement the new law.”We will never allow the NRC exercise and Citizenship Act in Bengal. We will not implement the citizenship amended Act, even though it has been passed in Parliament. The BJP can’t just bulldoze the states to implement it,” TMC chief Banerjee said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath accused the central government on Friday of practicing a “politics of distractions” and said the Citizenship Amendment Bill was an attempt to change the narrative by “design”, hints at rejecting the newly amended act.
While addressing the Indian Women’s Press Club, Nath said he was most worried about the future of the Indian youth which is suffering due to economic slowdown.
“The worst part is the politics of distraction, changing the orbit of people’s imagination. Every time there is an economic slowdown, a bill is introduced, a decision is taken to divert people,” the Madhya Pradesh CM said.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan
The CAB is an attack on the secular and democratic character of India, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that his state has no place for such an “unconstitutional” law. “The Constitution of India assures the right to citizenship for all Indians, irrespective of their religion, caste, language, culture gender or profession. This very right is being made void by the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
A move to decide the Citizenship Act on the basis of religion amounts to rejecting the Constitution,” he claimed.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh
Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, has also promised to disallow the implementation of the CAB in his state.
Amarinder Singh has said the CAB is against secular values enshrined in the Constitution and asserted that his government would not allow the legislation to be implemented in Punjab.
“Congress, which has a majority in the State Assembly, would block the unconstitutional Bill in the House. Punjab government, on its part, would not let the legislation force apart the secular fabric of the nation, whose strength lies in its diversity,” Amarinder said.
Chattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel
Chief Minister of Chattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel said “The demonetization was done by it which took 125 lives, GST troubled businessmen. Due to the scrapping of section 370 and Article 35, the Jammu and Kashmir are still isolated from the rest of the nation and now they have lit the fire in the north-east region by introducing Citizenship Amendment Bill”. If they will enforce the NRC, every Indian will have to prove their citizenship, Baghel warned.
Baghel further apprised of the national level protest of the Congress in the national capital on Saturday and said almost all the top leaders of the party will participate in it, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. The agitation is against issues like price hike, unemployment, and corruption.
