Congress approves candidates for Meghalaya legislative assembly by-election

New Delhi | The Congress party on Thursday approved the proposal for candidature for the upcoming by-elections of the legislative assembly in Meghalaya.

In an issued statement by Congress general secretary Mukul Wasnik, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has approved the candidature of Jackuish Sangma from Ranikor (ST) constituency and Charlotte Momim from South Tura (ST) constituency.

Jackuish Sangma was the general secretary of GSU Khasi Hills zone before he joined the Congress in 2007. Sangma will contest against former Congress legislator and NPP candidate MM Danggo, UDP’s Pius Marwein and PDF nominee PN Syiem. According to sources, Congress has field Sangma to divide Garo votes and to ensure that the vote bank of Danggo, who is also a Garo, is reduced so that any rival candidate can win the by-poll. Others are Khasi candidates.

The bye-elections for both the seats of the Meghalaya legislative assembly are scheduled on August 27.
