Mumbai | A Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader from the west-central state of Maharashtra has been suspended from the party’s Central Committee, days after he publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party termed this action by the communist party as a “shameless display of intolerance.”
At a rally in Solapur on January 9, former CPI(M) MLA Narsaiyya Adam praised and thanked Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for speedy clearance to a housing project in Solapur district.
Adam, a former MLA from Solapur district, had said Modi should get another term as prime minister.
“Such praise is against the policy of our party, so a decision has been taken to suspend him for three months from the Central Committee,” a party official said on Tuesday.
The Committee is a key decision-making body of the communist party.
While Adam was unavailable for comments, state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said the CPI(M) decision is “a shameless display of intolerance.”
Adam has been suspended for the “inexcusable crime” of praising Modi and Fadnavis, he said.
“Such ideological intolerance is harmful for a healthy democracy,” the BJP spokesperson said.
